1 out of 5 stars Think twice before buying   July 28, 2010
James
I received my X505-Q880 on May 4th 2010.

I am sending my X505-Q880 in for repairs for the second time in three months. It would not even make it through a restore to factory software last night. For some odd reason the keyboard will not work occasionally after it crashes. I had to manually restart it 6 times in a row after it crashed just to get it to post once while trying to restore it to factory settings. It will also appear to restart but will hang with a blank screen and only the power button, hard drive, and a/c power lights glowing. Nothing else works. When this happens you have to remove the A/C power cord and battery to shut it down.

The first time it went in to Toshiba Depot for these same problems they replaced the USB/Audio board. It then passed all tests.

All of the temps were and are within normal limits. The vents on the underside are clear and clean.

It has been crashing when just surfing the web.

I have noticed it does not crash when running only on battery. But, you can't do a restore to factory default settings and software unless it is on A/C power.

This is a link to the Toshiba forums where you can find out more about user experience with these laptops.

[...]

I would not recommend anyone buying an X505-Q880 until Toshiba works out the problems with these units.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Gaming Laptop   July 10, 2010

This is the baddest laptop I have ever owned. The screen is fantastic and the keyboard lights up when you type. This unit is fast and works well right out of the box. I have installed several resource intensive games such as Modern Warfare and have had no problems. It takes about 45 seconds from the time I press the power button until I am logged on. The solid state drive helps with boot up times. Applications run fast with the 7200 rpm drive. I watch high definition movies on the blu ray dvd player. At first glance a lot of people think I am watching a tv. I have been asked several times "how big is that screen???" The shiny surface is finger print prone and the unit does get hot. Not one you want to hold in your lap for too long. The battery time is pretty good for a good display and high speed. I also use this as a dj machine and I can still run instant messaging, surf the internet and play all my music at the same time with no interruptions. The power supply is bulky and the unit is heavier than most laptops. This is more of a desktop replacement than a portable laptop. This is not one you want to travel with...unless its in a car. Going thru the airport my laptop was too big to fit in the tray for the x-ray. I got a workout carrying it around. But it is a very solid unit. You can't get any better unit for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Desktop replacement-Yes, Portable laptop-no   July 7, 2010

1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I wanted a laptop to replace my desktop, and did not want to give up key features I need for playing games and other higher-end uses. I did tons of research online into all kinds of laptops and options. This laptop has it all. A separate video card, not just on-board video. It has a blu-ray drive, and essential to that it has a full 1920x1080p HD screen. The 18.4" size makes the screen easy to see. Other HD laptops were not in full HD, but only a fraction of the 1920x1080p resolution. I priced items separately to build my own with a "white-box" and it would have cost about twice the price. For what you get this is a great price.

This computer also comes with a solid state drive. These are great drives because they are flash memory, and boot up super fast. The drawback, is that it is only 64 gig and that is mostly filled by the Windows 7 operating system and the many gigs of bloatware that Toshiba installed. Even after removing as much as I safely thought I could and still have all the functionality of things like the blu-ray player and dvd player etc. I still had about 47gig of that full. When installing my own software such as a full version of Microsoft office 2007 and games, you have to remember to tell it to save the program to the e drive instead of the c drive which is almost full. Everything defaults to the c drive automatically.

The battery life is awful. If I am playing a game, I get maybe 1/2 to 1 hour max out of it before it tells me I have 7 minutes left and need to plug in. At other times it will just shut off with no warning of battery life. The battery power pack plug is huge and itself must weigh around 5 pounds. If you bring this monster of a laptop anywhere, make sure to pack the power pack.

There are multimedia keyes on the the left hand side of the keyboard. These are rather annoying, as I am always hitting the volume buttons, which beep loudly, or the mute button, which beeps even when on mute. The backlit keyboard is great for typing or gaming at night. The light goes off when not in use, and comes back as soon as you hit a button. I hate touchpads, not just this one, but all of them, and this one can be disabled. Mine is always turned off, and I use a usb trackball instead. A wireless mouse would also work, but I don't care for mice. It has 4 usb ports, and an HDMI port. It has a multimedia reader for camera memory cards..but beware. If you stick most of them inside they will get jammed and you have to rig up something to get it out. They have the symbols next to the slot, and nothing that tells you that you need an adapter. There should be a warning next to the slot. The warning is burried in the owners manual, which is electronic, and usually not read until something like that happens.

This leaves the size. It is a great machine, and I usually think bigger is better, but this is massive. It weighs about 11 lbs by itself. It is huge, so finding a laptop desk is hard. I bought the biggest I could find and it still overhangs the top and makes my knees too hot, not to mention that after about an hour it just downright is uncomfortable on your lap even without the heat. Trying to find a carrying case or backpack is hard, and I ended up buying the gaming laptop made by Toshiba, as it was made to fit this laptop. It is rather expensive, but Amazon actually had the best price on it, and it qualified for their free shipping. After adding the laptop, charger and my trackball into it, there is not much more room left, but it is well padded.

Overall, I love the laptop. I am glad I got it, and it is very functional for me. It plays all my games, and that includes Crysis, which won't play on just any machine. It has tons of multimedia functions, and will play and write CDs and DVDs and plays Blu-Ray discs. The size is sometimes an inconvenience, but I did not buy it to lug around to every coffee shop in town. I just wanted to be able to play the computer in bed or on the couch, and not be restricted the desk in one room. It works beautifully, and have had no problems with it. I am even happy with the Windows 7 operating system. If you are looking to purchase a desktop replacement with all the bells and whistles this is the one. If you want something to take to coffee shops and hot spots, find something smaller.

3 out of 5 stars Black Screen Crash   June 18, 2010
D. Weingarten
My husband and I both bought one of these state of the art Toshiba X505-880's at the same time. His works perfectly, and mine keeps getting a black screen intermittently when I am playing Farm Town on Facebook and at other times. I have sent it into Toshiba twice, and they cannot reproduce the problem....so it remains unfixed. I am extremely unhappy about this. I have done a little research on the internet, and it seems that Toshiba has had similar problems on other laptops. Toshiba updated all my drivers (I was told that perhaps my husband's computer was manufactured at a different time than mine, so that could account for the different experience that he is having).

Given the choice, I would look into another computer. It's a great computer except for the black screen crashing A LOT. I think that Toshiba knows more than they are saying. They have had a lot of problems with the X305-Q701 doing the same black screen crash.

Just a word to the wise....do your research on the internet first.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY   June 1, 2010
