do not buy June 23, 2010 N. Peritore ('Brazil) I have owned many computers in my life and this is without doubt the most badly engineered, with inferior components and serious performance flaws.
After three years the computer has required constant component replacement. The worst flaw, besides the excruciatingly slow processing, is the keyboard and touch pad. The cursor jumps all over the screen while you are typing, resulting in scrambled text. You cannot type faster than 10 words a minute without letters dropping out.
The keyboard burned out after a year and was too expensive to replace.
Do not buy a Toshiba computer,it is inferior to anything on the market.
3 months, quit working and Toshiba wouldn't even consider fixing May 3, 2010 K. Johnson (phoenix) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought this computer the beginning of January. It broke in March. Called Toshiba and talked to someone, some where in the world. In less than 2 minutes he determined that it was the monitor and that it would not be covered. Cost between 150 and 320 bucks on a 550 computer. I had a Square Trade Warrantee that I used to try to fix it. They paid me $599 instead of fixing it, since it was cheaper for them. Would not recommend Toshiba to my worst enemy (I'm nice like that). I'll stick with HP in the future. Have 2 HP laptops cruising after 2 years.
Good until it quits working April 13, 2010 Kevin Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) We purchased this computer the beginning of January. It worked great for 3 months and then all of a sudden the screen went black. You could look real close and see a slight image. If you plugged the laptop into a monitor, the computer was working. I called Toshiba and in less than two minutes of evaluation and just before the tech in India deleted my hard drive, he determined it was the monitor and the monitor was not covered by warantee. It would be between $160 and $320 to repair and he asked if I wanted to set up a repair on it.
This may be true for all laptops, that the monitor isn't covered. I will look close next time I buy one. My gripe is that no one had even looked at the computer and he determined that it would not be covered by warantee. This computer was not abused or damaged. It was sitting on a table when it quit working. This guy had no genuine knowledge, just the little he was trained in troubleshooting (ie, turn off the computer, turn on the computer, delete the hard drive). Luckily I have an extended warantee that should cover the computer. I'll let everyone know my thoughts on Square Deal warantees when the computer is fixed. Started out a little rocky, but hopefully it will turn out ok.
Nice laptop for home users!! March 29, 2010 Graemmy Sanchez (Costa Rica) Is perfect instead of your old pc!!!
It works very good!! Nice time delivered!!
Great, except sound. March 15, 2010 Warren Christie (Lloyd Neck, New York USA) I have owned, and still do, numerous PCs from various manufacturers. It has been years since I owned a Toshiba. I have been using this one for about four weeks now, and for the money I rate it very highly. Overall, however, I gave it only three stars, but in essence I have two separate reviews for this machine: 1) The PC without regard to the internal speaker system -- 4.5 stars -- mostly excellent in all regards, 2) the internal speaker system -- 1 star for horrible. Here I am not making reference to the occasionally noted problem with Toshiba internal PC speakers to just stop working. Mine worked right out of the box, and still do. They just work very poorly -- both underpowered and with low sound quality. If you use external speakers or headphones this is not a problem, but if you plan on enjoying sounds directly from the PC speakers, and if that is important to you, I would be hesitant about buying this otherwise very fine machine.
